Circadian Rhythm

Let’s talk ‪#‎circadian-rhythm. Clocks went forward yesterday and we are still out of sync… Why do we feel disorientated still? Why is sleep so important?

Well, our circadian rhythms are really important. They are our patterns by which we tick each day, and even the smallest things like a late night, or all day in front of a blue-glare computer screen can disturb.

If we followed the natural daylight pattern, ditched the blackout curtains and woke with the blue light of dawn, then our body temperature would naturally rise, cortisol released and we would start the day.

This is why the concept of using our smartphones before bedtime would disrupt our sleep pattern- you are essentially creating fake daylight, tricking your body into releasing cortisol rather than the sleepy hormone melatonin.

So, a good night sleep is important so you are well rested and are in a good rhythm- so is a happy biological clock. A good, balanced diet without chemical stimulants will regulate your homeostasis (your natural wide awake vs feeling sleepy patterns). By reducing your caffeine intake, sugar (including fructose) and by omitting processed foods from your diet you can allow this natural balance to happen.

The best sleep I ever had was when I cut out caffeine and slept with the curtains slightly open to let the morning light through.

Eat well and Sleep Well x
