Amber’s role play ‘It’s got Sugar in it!’

Amber loves to play at the little house in the park. Last week she had clearly picked up on our family discussions about sugar and started this little game. It was so cute to see her playing in this way, making a real joke of saying ‘ergh it’s got sugar in it!’.

Amber is nearly three and so far she hasn’t had sweets or chocolate in her diet. Okay, so not strictly true- I think once at a party she had a chocolate chip cookie and the other week at my Auntie’s an old couple slipped her some sweets, but that’s it. Her favourite things are to help herself to a date from the snack drawer or to have a piece of fruit. She is very excited at the moment because it is her birthday party soon and we have been trying out ‘no cake, cake’ recipes (grain free, dairy free and refined sugar free).

Because as a family we don’t have any sweets or sugary snacks in the house, she is not in the habit of having it. I do get mocked a bit for this as a Mum, saying that she will go wild when she can have it. This is why, at the moment I am also teaching her about the effect of sugar and not just saying ‘no’. Amber understands at the moment that sugar isn’t good for her tummy or her teeth… and she is happily snacking on a rice cake with nut butter :-)
